Sunday School for Kids and their Parents
Welcome to S2, or Second Sundays, our new primary faith-formation program for pre-confirmation youth and their parents! On the second
Sunday of each month, October through May, children (pre-K through 8th grade) and their parents participate in faith-forming lessons and
activities as families, and as part of a larger family of faith. This new concept in faith formation recognizes the faith-home connection that we
promote at St. John and the importance of the family in kids’ faith journeys. Faith-formation doesn’t happen in an hour a week. It’s a lifelong
process that happens everywhere, and for children, especially at home. S2 provides kids and parents an opportunity to learn from and with
each other. Families will be encouraged to continue learning at home for the month following each session, and will be given materials and
tasks to support this learning.
The pastors will lead a Workshop with children preparing to receive the Sacrament for the first time. Usually second graders receive this
instruction. This takes place in the spring. See one of the pastors for more information.
Thursday Evenings, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM during the school year. 7th and 8th graders meet to study the Bible and Martin Luther’s
Small Catechism. At the end of this two-year course of instruction, they have the opportunity to affirm their Baptism in worship
through the Rite of Confirmation. Confirmation students also participate in service and gathering opportunities, such as Youth
Quake, a weekend youth gathering, and the 30-Hour Famine, an overnight lock-in spent raising money and awareness to fight

Vacation Bible School
VBS takes place in August and is open to all children, age 3 through having just completed 4th grade. Youth in 5th grade
and up are welcome to come and help. VBS is certainly a fun and faith-filled experience for children, but it also provides
an excellent leadership training and relationship building experience for youth volunteers.
2016’s theme is “Cave Quest: Following Jesus, the Light of the World.”
