Tom was born and raised in Detroit, graduated from Stevenson High School in Livonia and attended Eastern Michigan. He served in the Army Reserve for 6 years, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant (E6). He worked for Farmer Jack for 37 years and Kroger for 6 years as a store manager, retiring in 2012. In his capacity as Store manager he managed several stores doing in excess of $50 million a year and managed as many as 165 employees. Learn more.
Tom and his wife Donna have been at St. John for 2 years and at Bethlehem for over 30 years until it closed. Since 1998, he served on the Council whenever eligible, and as Council President for 10 years. At St. John he serves as a Lay Assistant and is a member of the Chancel Choir, the Thursday Men's Group and the Friday Guys. He also chaired the committee that planned and implemented the Bethlehem Activity Center project.
Tom was born at Harper Hospital in Detroit during the Baby Boom period, grew up in northwest Detroit, and graduated from Redford High School. He then earned an Associateís Degree in General Business from Schoolcraft College. Learn more.
Most of his career was in automotive engineering with suppliers to the industry. He worked in drafting, design, supervision, and document control management at companies such as Bendix Research Labs, United Technologies, and Framatome Connectors. Recently, he has been working as a part-time office manager and gathering financial reports for a Cystic Fibrosis support group organization.
Tom was baptized Episcopalian, and was a loyal member of St. Christopherís Church in Detroit from an early age, up to its closing in January 2015. His father, Willard Taepke, was a Lutheran growing up, but ďconvertedĒ to Episcopalian when he married Tomís mother. Later in life, Willard returned to his church roots, and came to St. John. After Willardís passing in April 2007, Tom honored his fatherís pledge by coming to the early service at St. John once a month. He found St. Johnís members friendly and welcoming and now feels this is his church home. Last year he made it official, and became a member.
Tom attends the Bible Study group, Menís Breakfast Group and Small Groups. He also serves as a Counter and helps the Resource Team to set up for various activities within the church building.
Michael Kennedy is a new member at St. John since the merger with Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Michael was born and raised as part of the Bethlehem family as were his parents and grandparents. In 2015 Pastor Lauren married Michael and his wife, Amanda, at the Grecian Gardens in Southgate. Michaelís wife and stepdaughter, Anabella (9), were recently baptized at St. John and officially became part of the St. John family. Learn more.
Michael currently resides in Westland with his Amanda, Anabella and Hailey the dog. Michael is a Police Sergeant with the Canton Township Police Department and has been employed there for 14 years. Michael is new to the St. John Board as of 2016 and is enthusiastic about playing an active role in his new church!
Beverly has been a member of St. John Lutheran Church since 2002. Beverly and her daughter Kristin proudly joined St. John to be nearer to her father, Robert Brown, who was a long time member of St. John until his demise in 2015. Learn more.
She retired as a school administrator from the Inkster Public Schools in 2013 after 39 years of service. It is with great pride and God's help that she hopes to serve the members of St. John.
